As winter ends and spring begins, it’s time to start cleaning. Not only do you want to clean the inside of your home and personal belongings, but you should also take the time to perform some home maintenance as well. There are several items you should have written down on a spring maintenance checklist.

Spring cleaning and home maintenance are essential when wanting to keep your home in the best shape possible all year long. To ensure you do just that, continue reading below. Here’s everything you need to know about winter cleanup and spring maintenance for homeowners!

Deep Clean the HVAC Unit

Directly after spring comes summer and before the hot summer days arrive, you’ll want to prepare your HVAC unit. Doing this will ensure your home is comfortable and your energy bills are low. Service and test the unit now, so you have enough time to schedule an appointment with a professional HVAC tech if needed.

If you’re not sure how to deep clean the unit, then be sure to have the technician do this for you as well.

Re-Caulk Where Needed

Caulking around the exterior of your home will help keep water out and will help keep your home insulated. If you find any areas around the home that might be exposed to water, then be sure to seal these openings with caulk. If you find any existing caulking that’s damaged, then you’ll want to re-caulk those sections.

Don’t forget to clean the area before caulking for a quality finish.

Test Smoke/Carbon Monoxide Detectors

You want to test the smoke detectors in your home every month to be sure they’re working correctly. For this reason, it’s important to include this on your spring maintenance checklist. You also want to replace the batteries once a year, which can be done every spring.

If the replace-by sticker has a soon-approaching date, then you’ll need to replace the entire detector then also.

Tackle the Stubborn Areas

Are there any areas in the home with stubborn dirt, stains, or grime? Some areas to consider are the toilets, showers/bathtubs, and kitchen. Now is the time to tackle these tough spots.

Scrub the toilets and showers to remove any stains and soap scum. Clean the baseboards in the bathrooms and kitchen to remove dust and dirt. Be sure to deep clean these rooms every spring if not more often.

You should also consider pressure washing the exterior of your home, such as the driveway, deck, and more.

Clear the Gutters and Downspouts

When’s the last time you cleared out the gutters and downspout? Leaves, twigs, and other debris can easily land in the gutters. Broken-off shingle pieces can land here as well.

If the gutters aren’t cleaned on a regular basis, then all of this debris can end up creating a clog. Clogged gutters can cause damage to your home’s roof and foundation. Always carefully remove debris from your gutters and then rinse them with water to ensure the water flows properly and lands away from the house.
