A lot of people don’t know this but there are many roofs out there that contain membranes. A roof membrane is a thin protective material that stops leaks. There are many factors that can help a person decide if a roof membrane is a good purchase.

A roofing membrane can be made out of many different materials. They also aren’t always necessary, however. Whether or not you’ll need a roofing membrane will depend on the materials and structure of your home’s roof.

The weather will also play a factor.

If you’d like to learn more about roof membranes, then keep on reading and we will take you through everything you will want to know!

The Purpose of Roofing Membranes

The primary purpose of roofing membranes is to stop water from leaking into the house. However, just because something stops a leak doesn’t mean that it is a membrane. For example, a lot of roofs today use some layers of asphalt to stop water from getting in.

There are a lot of benefits when it comes to using asphalt in roofing. It is durable, affordable, and easy to take care of. With enough asphalt layers, it is possible to make a watertight seal on the roof.

However, because of how thick asphalt is, it is not considered a membrane.

In a lot of instances, thin materials are used usually because they are easy to repair, maintain, and install. Also, while asphalt is affordable, it is a lot harder to install asphalt. It’s also difficult to seal asphalt at every point on the roof.

Do You Need a Roofing Membrane?

Now that you understand what a roofing membrane is, it’s time to figure out if a roofing membrane is going to be right for you. Roofing membranes are usually only used on flat roofs.

If you have a flat roof, it’s possible that water can pool on your roof and start to leak into your home. This is why a roofing membrane is necessary.

Do you have a sloped roof? If so, then water will likely just slide down the side of your roof. However, with a flat roof, you need to have a roofing membrane or some other way to make your roof waterproof.

However, the downside of roofing membranes, is that they’re not usually aesthetically pleasing. You can fix this by painting the roof or using asphalt shingles. For a business, you should look into using commercial roofing services.
